Hat and Scarf for Mama

Alright, I'm old.  My mother told me this would happen one day.  Now it has.  The cold has become intolerable unless I am properly dressed.  I can no longer bounce back from being freezing cold, like I used to.
So I enjoyed the days of walking with my coat flapping open, hands tucked in my sleeves for warmth and because it's hard to hold a smoke with mittens on!   Running shoes in ankle deep snow are a thing of the past, they may not last 4 years if I do that!

Alas I am also the Mama who decks out in snow pants et. al. to drive the girls to school  Are they embarrassed?  I don't care.

I made myself mittens last year ,  here is a hat to match.
I used the same pattern to make my hat as I used to make Faron's
using the prescribed materials, worsted weight yarn and a K hook.
I deviated from the pattern enough to make this a 'pony tail' hat.  I am often found wearing a pony tail in the winter, I hate static hair and no amount of spray in conditioner other home remedy will control it so in goes the pony tail.  Now, being ill, my arms won't hold out long enough to do much other than sweep into a pony tail, so pony tail it is.  AH but pony tail's don't like being under toque's so I made a 7 chain gap in the middle of the back of the hat to pull my pony tail through.  Works great and best of all, it doesn't gape open when I am not wearing a pony tail.  Win win!  If I were to do this again, I'd leave the 7 chain opening closer to the crown than to the nape, than I did.

I  also wanted to try my hand at some colour work I saw a tutorial for, I

can't find the tutorial now, I don't remember if it was online or in a magazine or a video or what it was. GAH!
Anyway, the variations of colour aren't terribly obvious given that one of the yarns was variegated, however, it was good practice!  I enjoyed it a lot and have begun my own design of a scarf to coordinate with my mittens and hat, using the same colour work technique.

I'll throw up a picture when it is complete and in the mean time, I'll try to find the tutorial to share with you, in case you want to try this at home *Don't laugh, Happy Geek!*
