And me so enthralled by the beauty and sadness of it all, completely forgot to pull out my camera and capture the moment.
As we drove Jaala to horse camp, way out in the boon docks, Thyme, sitting between the captain's seats on the floor in the van, barked! To the right, across a small open field, ran a Mama moose and her very new baby. Faron stopped the van so as to let them cross, though we had a lot of time, we could have been past them in plenty of time, I think we all just wanted to watch.
Something must have frightened her to have sent her out from the near cover of the trees, into the open and across the road, with such a wobbly little baby.
I gave Thyme her "that's enough" command, which really means, whatever you're doing now...stop!
The five of us watched, completely swept up in the fascination of seeing these gorgeously ugly, and majestic moose, run. The Mama's beard was flying, she moved her legs like a Lipizzaner, as she ran. She was such a dark colour compared to her babe. The babe was a light chestnut colour. So cute, so little! All was well, and they were only yards from the protection of more trees, the Mama cleared the 3 wire strung fence, no problem, she didn't even have to alter her pace, nor her footing, it was like it wasn't even there.....for the babe, the fence was another story, he got his front legs over....that was it. He was hung up by the pits on the top wire. He sounded like a little lamb, bleating in distress. Eventually his flailing flung him over the fence and he fell, then got up and started running, up the middle of the road. Poor confused thing. Faron started the van, which encouraged the little thing to head to the opposite ditch, but he couldn't find the place his Mama crossed the next fence, and he couldn't get over this fence either, so he kept bleating frantically running in the ditch. One of the girls spied the Mama, through the trees, keeping pace with the baby, on the other side of the fence. Eventually the baby made an attempt to get over the second fence, with the same results as the previous. This time, he was hung up long enough that Faron was tempted to run over, grab his ass and shove it over. By the time Faron had his seatbelt off though, the babe disentangled himself and was reunited with his Mama.
What an ordeal.
While I know that we occupy this space along with the animals. While I know the use and need for fencing on property....it makes me so sad that the encroaching we do into the wild areas, cause such interruptions in the lives of the wild residents
