My Daughter, my lovely Daughter.

Who is that in the tall grasses singing
By herself, near the water?
I can not see her
But can it be her
Than whom the grasses so tall
Are taller, My daughter,
My lovely daughter?

Who is that in the tall grasses running
Beside her, near the water?
She can not see there
Time that pursued her
In the deep grasses so fast
And faster
And caught her,
My foolish daughter.

What is the wind in the fair grass saying
Like a verse, near the water?
Saviours that over
All things have power
Make Time himself grow kind
And kinder
That sought her,
My little daughter.

Who is that at the close of the summer
Near the deep lake?
Who wrought her
Comely and slender?
Time but attends and befriends her
Than whom the grasses though tall
Are not taller, My daughter,
My gentle daughter.

My water broke when I got up to pee. I called the Maternity Ward of the hospital, they said "come straight in." I wasn't in labor yet, so I didn't let them hook me up to an IV, I asked that they call my Doctor. On his advice they let me go home until labor started. Kyle took the day off, we walked around the mall, went to a movie, had a nap....still no labor.

9pm
Feeling sick and achy, my back was tight and sore, I decided that was the begining of labor and called my Doula to come over.

10pm
Holy crap! This shit hurts! Labor started as dull tight cramping and within the hour was intense 35 second pain every 5.5 mins.
We headed to the hospital. I was vomitting and shivering....
I hit the bath tub as soon as I was checked in, I refused to fetal monitor and the dialation check and the IV and the antibiotics.
I stayed in the tub until 4:15 cause it was time to get that girl out.

Welcome to the world Jaala Christine! She was so quiet and alert, checking out her dad and I turning her head when she heard him speak. The nurses can't believe how calm she was. 8lbs 4oz, 21 inches. BIG girl!

My beautiful Daughter is 8, and I find myself asking the same questions and making the same laments as Irving Layton, in his poem...."who wrought her comely and slender?"

We had a birthday party for her at mom and dad's place over the weekend. Grammy got her a Ninja Turtle cake, (HOORAY!) She was blessed with a lot of very thoughtful gifts, a gameboy and three games from Aunty and Mike, 2 new Leapster games and a watch from Grammy, a scooter from Mom and Faron, a bubble gun and a horse shirt from Danielle, and a scuba set from Leisha.

We colored easter eggs, had easter basket hunt, HUGE dinner and tons of play time.

PS...I love it when New Friends call!!!

  1. Happy B-day Jaala.
Sounds like you got quite the haul!

    Teri,
YOu and I sound rather opposite when it comes to giving birth! I am a wussie, non-crunchy sort. Good for you to stand your ground, that is not easy in hospital.

  2. I really am not the sharpest tool in the toolshed, just figured out that the PS was for me.
    Duh.
Anyway, I'll be bunking about 45 min away in Didsbury so once we got settled in I'll give you a shout and we can connect for coffee! I'll run up to Red Deer one day to meet you.
I've heard tons about you (all good) and I've even taught your kids in Sunday School up in Fox once (you and Char were away for the weekend so K and the kids were staying with Ryan) so I'd like to meet you in person!
